One of the most captivating experiences offered by the Apple Vision Pro is its content viewing capabilities. Regardless of whether the material is specifically designed for this $3,500 spatial computer, nearly any content can become a remarkable spectacle.
I found myself immersed in a Springsteen concert at London’s Hyde Park on a massive 100-inch screen, where I could select my preferred viewpoint or even enjoy episodes of Spongebob with the beloved character beside me in a tailored environment. However, some of the most striking experiences are those created exclusively for this headset—so far, these have included unscripted adventures like close encounters with wildlife and walking on high wires suspended above breathtaking landscapes.
This week marks an exciting development: Apple is set to release its inaugural scripted film captured using Apple Immersive Video technology. Titled Submerged, it will be available starting Thursday, October 10, 2024. This film will be accessible at no cost to all Vision Pro users through the TV app on their devices. While specific runtime details have not been disclosed, it has been categorized as a short film.
The film was directed and written by Edward Berger, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker known for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front. Another project he has worked on titled Conclave is also expected to release soon.
Although no official trailer was released yet, Apple shared footage showcasing various scenes from the film along with behind-the-scenes glimpses featuring Berger utilizing the Vision Pro while filming. The unique camera designed for capturing content in Apple Immersive Video format was also highlighted. This innovative approach promises viewers an experience that transcends traditional movie-watching; instead of merely observing a story unfold onscreen, audiences will feel as though they are part of it.
The narrative transports viewers into a WWII submarine during an intense torpedo attack—Apple describes it as follows: “Submerged invites viewers onto a WWII-era submarine and follows its crew as they wrestle to combat a harrowing torpedo attack. This adrenaline-pumping thrill ride showcases unique storytelling experiences made possible by Apple Immersive Video—a remarkable media format leveraging ultra-high resolution 3D video and Spatial Audio to immerse viewers directly into action.”
Submerged, launching October 10, 2024, will be free for owners of Vision Pro and aims to broaden the range of Immersive Video offerings available within this platform—a promising step towards more scripted content that we hope will continue expanding in future releases.
I look forward to watching it upon release; however I believe that Apple’s Vision Pro enhances even standard films or television series remarkably well. I’m particularly eager to view Disney+’s upcoming documentary about Springsteen titled Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. Additionally, I hope Netflix joins this trend so I can enjoy Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts concert film later this month too! The device truly shines when paired with excellent displays and impressive Spatial Audio—especially when used alongside AirPods Pro.
