On Tuesday, Starbucks announced that Laxman Narasimhan will be stepping down from his position as CEO just 17 months after taking on this role in March 2023. Chipotle’s current CEO Brian Niccol has been named as his replacement starting in September, while Rachel Ruggeri, the existing CFO, will act as interim CEO until then.
The period under Narasimhan’s management was marked by a noticeable decline in sales figures alongside confrontations with labor unions and demands from activist investors.
According to William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia, “It is not unexpected that Laxman is leaving given the significant downturn in sales over the last nine months and pressures from activist investors. His successor’s appointment may create waves across the industry.”
Sales Decline
A critical indicator for restaurants—same-store sales—has shown troubling trends for Starbucks. In late July, it reported a 3% decrease in global comparable store revenues compared to an impressive 10% increase during the same quarter last year.
This downturn was also reflected domestically. U.S. comparable store sales fell by 2%, whereas there had been a notable rise of 7% during the previous year’s quarter.
In China—a crucial market for expansion—comparable store revenues plummeted by 14% year-over-year compared to an exceptional growth rate of 46% at this time last year.
The company cited several factors contributing to its disappointing results. Boycotts stemming from conflicts related to the Middle East have led some customers to withdraw their support; Narasimhan explained this as being “influenced by widespread misconceptions about our brand.” He pointed out difficult consumer circumstances within both U.S. markets and China which experienced reduced spending levels coupled with intensified competition.
To remedy poor performance metrics, Starbucks has explored various strategies such as introducing boba-inspired beverages and meal bundling promotions; however, Stifel restaurant analyst Chris O’Cull expressed concern about their 6% drop in U.S. transaction volumes despite only slightly benefiting from an average ticket price increase of about 3%. He deemed these numbers “alarming,” emphasizing ongoing challenges for boosting customer base engagement through new offerings.
