A year post-divorce from Hayden, Fonda became involved with media tycoon Ted Turner. Their first encounter took place during a charitable event in 1990, but it wasn’t until after being reintroduced by former President Jimmy Carter that romance blossomed between them.
“When I tied the knot with him, I assumed it would last a lifetime,” Fonda shared in January 2023. However, after ten years together, she recognized the necessity of prioritizing her own needs above all else.
“He required constant presence,” she reminisced about their relationship during an interview with The New Yorker. “What we had was more akin to caretaking than genuine love; our paths diverged as I matured.” In retrospect on their breakup in 2001, she stated that despite his allure—describing him as “captivating” and “intellectually stimulating”—she felt compelled by an inner voice urging her toward self-discovery rather than remaining stagnant.
Selecting new beginnings over comfort wasn’t easy; however, even after parting ways amicably with Turner—a sentiment she conveyed by calling him her “most cherished ex-husband”—Fonda believes such sacrifices were essential for personal growth.
