The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have successfully concluded the inaugural in-person Global Model WHO (GMWHO), which took place today. This significant event brought together over 350 youth delegates from 52 nations across various regions.
Held at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, this pivotal gathering offered young leaders a realistic experience simulating the World Health Assembly, which serves as the foremost global health decision-making body. Participants engaged directly with critical global health challenges and promoted international cooperation.
Throughout the event, youth delegates collaborated to formulate resolutions on pressing issues such as climate change’s impact on health, pollution, mental well-being, antimicrobial resistance, initiatives for global health and peace, tuberculosis management, and efforts to eradicate polio.
A key moment during this week was when delegates unanimously adopted a declaration that highlights an urgent call for a comprehensive Pandemic Agreement aimed at safeguarding against future pandemics.
This declaration urges all WHO Member States to finalize and implement this agreement within the year. It emphasizes that “only through coordinated action can we safeguard lives, well-being, and futures of our generation.”
The statement reflects a strong commitment from youth delegates advocating for an equitable world that ensures no one is left behind.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, expressed his appreciation for GMWHO participants’ dedication to global health advocacy during his welcome address.
“This generation plays a crucial role in creating a safer and healthier world; their voices are vital in developing effective solutions to global health challenges,” Dr. Tedros remarked.
The GMWHO not only enhanced participants’ negotiation skills but also deepened their understanding of health governance while reinforcing their roles as advocates for a more prepared and inclusive approach to global healthcare systems.
Savannah Jamora from Australia served as Director-General of the Global Model WHO conference. She described it as an exhilarating opportunity for young individuals to delve into global health policy and diplomacy while providing them with an effective platform to share their insights aimed at fostering a healthier world.
“Young people are not just future stakeholders in global health; they are essential collaborators shaping its present,” Savannah stated. “By integrating youth perspectives into policy-making processes based on their experiences and innovative ideas we can ensure these policies meet current needs effectively.”
She further added: “The Global Model WHO equips young individuals with tools necessary for actively contributing towards building a healthier society that prioritizes equity.”
The organization of GMWHO aligns with WHO’s commitment to engage with youth globally by empowering them through support actions while promoting partnerships that enhance visibility within communities worldwide.
