Catholics Organize Rosary Rally in Response to Controversial Video by Michigan Governor
A gathering of Catholics took place outside the residence of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Sunday, following a backlash against a social media video that many deemed disrespectful to a sacred Christian tradition.
Background of the Rally
The “Rosary Rally for Religious Respect,” organized by CatholicVote, was prompted by a contentious video posted online. In this clip, Gov. Whitmer donned a Harris-Walz campaign hat while feeding Doritos to Liz Plank, a kneeling liberal podcaster.
This video followed an internet trend where one person feeds another in an exaggeratedly sensual manner while maintaining an awkward gaze into the camera, all set to the song “Dilemma” by Nelly and Kelly Rowland.
Religious Leaders Respond
The peculiar video aimed to highlight the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, which allocated nearly $53 billion towards revitalizing semiconductor supply chains within the United States. However, various religious organizations expressed that it trivialized the sacrament of Holy Communion.
In light of the criticism, Gov. Whitmer issued an apology, asserting that her intention was never to mock individuals’ faiths.
“Throughout my more than 25 years in public service,” she stated during an interview with FOX 2 News, “I would never do anything to belittle someone’s beliefs.” She emphasized her commitment to advocating for people’s rights to practice their personal faiths.
The Rally’s Purpose and Participants’ Views
On Sunday afternoon, approximately 100 Catholics gathered near Moores River Drive in Lansing—the capital city of Michigan—to recite prayers from the rosary as part of their demonstration against what they viewed as blasphemy towards their most cherished sacrament.
A participant shared with The Lansing State Journal, expressing her discontent over what she described as “the governor’s offensive portrayal mocking the Holy Eucharist.” She added: “It is our most sacred sacrament; we came here today not only for prayer but also out of mercy for our Lord.”
A Call for Respect and Understanding
CatholicVote’s National Political Director conveyed that Sunday’s rally stemmed from significant concern regarding actions perceived as undermining respect for Eucharistic dignity amid increasing anti-Catholic sentiments among some progressive factions.
“It is deeply troubling when our faith and its core beliefs are openly ridiculed,” he remarked. He further noted that prayer holds immense power—especially when directed toward national leaders—and emphasized that this rally served both as a plea for Gov. Whitmer’s understanding and respect toward religious convictions and as a reminder about Catholic voting influence.
Political Reactions
Republican State Representative Josh Schriver from Oxford publicly supported the initiative through social media posts promoting awareness about this rally focused on religious respect.
