Exciting News: A New Chapter for The Princess Diaries
After a long wait of twenty years, Disney has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved Princess Diaries is in production. Following years of speculation about a third film, fans can rejoice with the news that director Adele Lim, known for her work on Joy Ride, will helm this new installment. Anne Hathaway, who starred as Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo in both films released in 2001 and 2004 respectively, expressed her excitement on Instagram by sharing nostalgic clips from the original movies.
“Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures,” Hathaway wrote in her post. “The fairy tale continues ❤️🔥”
The original films featured iconic performances from Julie Andrews alongside Hathaway and were directed by Garry Marshall, who sadly passed away in 2016. Recently, Hathaway reassured fans about the film’s development amidst doubts regarding its production status during an interview with V Magazine. She stated that “we’re in a good place,” although she noted there are no official announcements yet.
Dame Julie Andrews has also shared her thoughts regarding a potential sequel but expressed some reservations compared to her co-star’s enthusiasm.
“It’s been quite some time since we made those two films,” she remarked during an interview with Today. “I’m not sure if it’s wise to revisit them because sometimes it’s better to leave well enough alone.” However, she added that she’d be delighted if another movie were made.
Adele Lim brings significant experience to this project as she previously penned screenplays for notable films such as the hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, along with Disney’s animated feature film released in 2021 titled Raya and the Last Dragon.
“As an ardent admirer of the original The Princess Diaries, I am thrilled to contribute to bringing this cherished franchise back for audiences around the globe,” Lim stated through Variety. “We aim to celebrate themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship.”
This revival isn’t limited just to The Princess Diaries—there are also plans underway for a sequel to another classic featuring Anne Hathaway—The Devil Wears Prada!
