Concerns Arise Over Amazon’s New Kindle Colorsoft Ereader
The highly anticipated Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon’s inaugural color ereader, has recently hit the market. However, early adopters are expressing dissatisfaction, with some opting to return or exchange their devices.
As highlighted by The Verge, a noticeable yellow strip is affecting the display of the Kindle Colorsoft for certain users. This issue has contributed to a disappointing average rating of 2.6 stars on its Amazon product page in the United States.
The discoloration appears to vary among users. According to discussions on a related Reddit thread, some individuals report yellowing along both the bottom and vertical edges of their screens. While others are less concerned about this issue, they have returned their devices due to “dead pixels scattered in one corner.”

Conversely, not all customers share negative sentiments; several users have taken to social media platforms like Reddit expressing satisfaction with their new ereader despite mixed reviews on Amazon.

The root cause of this discoloration remains uncertain—whether it stems from software glitches or hardware defects is still under investigation. A post within the original Reddit discussion indicates that Amazon acknowledges this issue and is actively seeking solutions. If it turns out that uneven lighting is at fault, it may suggest deeper hardware problems rather than mere software errors.
At TechRadar, we have yet to receive our review unit for the Kindle Colorsoft; thus far, our brief interaction during its media launch in October did not reveal any such issues.
The Verge notes that while images may exaggerate the discoloration problem compared to real-life observations, their reviewer might not have noticed it without user complaints highlighting these concerns.
A Glimpse into Future Releases
I find myself relieved that I won’t be able to experience the Kindle Colorsoft until 2025 when it’s set for release in Australia (my home country). By then, I hope Amazon will resolve these issues so I can enjoy what could potentially be one of the finest Kindles ever produced (time will tell). Unfortunately for those who jumped at early purchases—spending around $300—it’s disappointing that such a popular device launched with notable flaws.
