Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican figure from South Carolina and a close associate of Donald Trump, has offered some guidance for the former president—advising him to curb his racially insensitive comments regarding Vice President Kamala Harris.
Following Harris’s emergence as the leading candidate for the Democratic Party, Trump’s commentary has increasingly centered around race.
In a recent interview with Fox News Sunday, Graham emphasized that Trump’s critique should be directed toward what he considers Harris’s poor judgment rather than her ethnic background.
“I would tell President Trump that my concerns with Kamala Harris stem not from her background but rather from her decision-making,” he stated emphatically.
Furthermore, he remarked on the ongoing discourse: “The focus seems to be on her lineage rather than addressing her problematic liberal record over many years.”
Graham continued by encouraging Trump to concentrate on highlighting what he perceives as flaws in Harris’s judgment: “This election is crucial—make sure you present your case against Kamala’s judgment effectively.”
Graham’s exhortation follows controversial statements made by Trump during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago. There, he claimed ignorance regarding whether or not Harris identified as Black until several years later.
Moreover, attempts have been made by Trump to convince his supporters that while she carries Indian heritage—as she is biracial—Harris is not fully Black. He even shared an older picture featuring her in traditional Indian attire via his Truth Social platform earlier this month.
Since securing Biden’s endorsement for vice presidency, Vice President Harris has faced a whirlwind of attacks rooted in race and gender biases.
Political analysts have noted that such maneuvers are standard tactics within political campaigns, especially as election season intensifies. Thomas Hollihan—a communication professor at USC Annenberg—stated back in July: “America has long experienced politically charged assaults based on race; hence it’s unsurprising.”
As this dialogue evolves further into campaigning season, representatives for all involved parties have yet to respond publicly regarding these latest developments outside regular business hours.
