The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, issued a response to comments from former President Donald Trump during the annual National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention held in Chicago on Wednesday.
During his appearance, Trump controversially campaign-strikes-back-at-disgusting-smear-of-military-book/” title=”War Veteran Strikes Back: Furious Response to Dem Opponent's Aide's 'Disgusting' Smear of His Military Book”>remarked that Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, merely “happened to turn Black” in recent times. The event was marked by multiple tense interactions with journalists who questioned him about his previous statements regarding race and police-related incidents.
Later the same day, while speaking at a Sigma Gamma Rho sorority event in Houston, Texas, Harris addressed Trump’s statements directly.
“What we witnessed was just another instance of the same old tactics,” she remarked regarding Trump’s behavior at NABJ. “It embodies divisiveness and disrespect. Let’s be clear: this country deserves much more than this. The American public deserves leadership based on truthfulness—one that does not resort to anger when faced with reality. We require leaders who recognize our differences as vital elements contributing to our strength.”
No immediate comments were released from either the office of Vice President Harris or her campaign when approached for clarification by media outlets.
Steven Cheung, who serves as communications director for Trump’s campaign team, criticized Harris’s absence from the NABJ event: “It’s easy for someone like Kamala Harris—a coward—to make grand claims when she couldn’t even be bothered to attend.”
A source familiar with Vice President Harris’s commitments informed the Associated Press that her schedule did not allow her attendance at the convention. This anonymous insider also noted that while she offered to participate virtually—an option that was turned down—the AP chose not to disclose their identity.
