Discovering Fort Worth: A Weekend Adventure
Fort Worth, Texas, is a city rich with history and modern flair. Known by many names—Cowtown, the Wall Street of the West, and Where the West Begins—it offers a unique blend of Old West charm and contemporary culture. During my recent visit to this vibrant city, I was amazed at how it has evolved while still honoring its cowboy heritage.
A Friday Full of Exploration
I began my journey in Sundance Square, a lively 35-block area in downtown Fort Worth featuring a stunning plaza with a fountain and an eye-catching disco-mirrored cowboy hat. My next stop was the Water Gardens—a serene series of reflecting pools that gained fame from their appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s music video. As I strolled through the area, I took time to read historical plaques that narrated tales from Fort Worth’s past involving legendary figures like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Lunchtime brought me to Don Artemio—a James Beard Award semifinalist—where I indulged in delicious enchiladas filled with queso fresco drizzled with tamarind mole sauce. Afterward, I retreated to my suite at The Crescent Hotel—a chic establishment boasting 200 rooms that opened last November. This hotel features Canyon Ranch’s inaugural Wellness Club complete with a sprawling fitness center and spa offering luxurious treatments such as diamond peptide facials.
Cultural Riches Await
The Crescent Hotel is conveniently located near several world-class art institutions that rival those found in larger cities. The Kimbell Art Museum—designed by Louis Kahn—houses one of Michelangelo’s earliest known paintings alongside masterpieces by Monet and Rembrandt within an exhibition hall crafted by Renzo Piano.
Just steps away lies the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth designed by Tadao Ando as well as the Amon Carter Museum of American Art which showcases an impressive collection focused on photography depicting life in the American West featuring renowned artists like Richard Avedon and Dorothea Lange.
A Tribute to Cowgirls
The highlight for me was visiting the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame where traditional embroidered dresses worn during Escaramuza Charra competitions were on display—celebrating Mexican cowgirls who perform choreographed equestrian skills while riding sidesaddle.
Saturday Adventures: Creativity Unleashed
The following morning led me through Southside neighborhoods where young creatives thrive. My first destination was PS1200—a mixed-use space designed by architect Marlon Blackwell housing various venues including Gifted Group—a collective founded by sisters Jazmin and Jeanette Ramirez showcasing linen clothing along with ceramic jewelry at their boutique called Gifted.
I enjoyed brunch at Paris Coffee Shop—the oldest diner revamped into a modern eatery serving hearty breakfast options like smoked-brisket tacos paired perfectly with buttermilk pancakes before exploring South Main neighborhood filled with female-owned businesses such as Bodega South Main grocery store and Winton & Waits fair-trade boutique where I picked up aromatic candles from Apothenne fragrance house.
A Taste of Tradition at Stockyards
No visit would be complete without experiencing historic Stockyards where longhorn cattle are herded daily alongside rodeos held every weekend at Cowtown Coliseum! To fit right into this atmosphere,I stopped into City Boots for custom-made cowgirl boots followed by selecting a personalized beaver-felt cowboy hat from Best Hat Store crafted expertly under Danny Adams’ guidance who remarked “A cowboy hat isn’t just an accessory; it defines everything else.”
Nights Filled With Fun!
Mule Alley within Stockyards buzzes alive after dark offering shopping experiences along nightlife spots like Sidesaddle Saloon where I sipped on jalapeño-infused cocktails before taking line-dancing lessons at Billy Bob’s Texas—the largest honky-tonk globally! Our instructor humorously reminded us “We’re here in Fort Worth—not Dallas!” eliciting cheers throughout our group as we learned various dance moves amidst clattering boots echoing around us!
A Relaxing Sunday Retreat
The next day saw me checking into Bowie House owned by Jo Ellard—a prominent businesswoman whose suite featured equestrian-themed decor including boot benches alongside black-and-white photographs celebrating Texan ranch culture curated beautifully throughout her property showcasing over 400 artworks including pieces from Kenyan artist Thandiwe Muriu adorning lounge areas elegantly!
Savoring Nature’s Beauty Along Clearfork Trailhead
< p > In search for fresh air later that afternoon led me towards Trailhead Park situated along Trinity River home not only shops but also delightful eateries! At Press Café ,I relished waffles topped generously sunny-side-up eggs accompanied crispy bacon maple syrup creating perfect brunch experience .The park also houses Keith House Skyspace -an installation created James Turrell inspired Quaker meeting houses illuminating light shadows playfully changing colors throughout day ! p >
< p > Afterward ,I rented bike cruising scenic trails back towards Bowie House passing locals enjoying picnics walking dogs exercising happily embracing life calling Cowtown home just like myself during this short yet memorable stay ! p >
