- Stevie Nicks believes that continuing with her unplanned pregnancy would have led to the disbandment of Fleetwood Mac.
- The artist’s latest track, ”The Lighthouse,” was motivated by the recent Supreme Court ruling on abortion rights.
- A survey indicated that 76% of women are worried about how the reversal of Roe v. Wade could affect their career progression.
As the presidential election approaches in less than two weeks, Stevie Nicks, now 76 years old, is vocal about her support for abortion rights.
In a conversation with CBS News Sunday Morning, she recounted an unexpected pregnancy early in her career in 1979, despite using an IUD and feeling “completely protected.”
“I thought to myself, ‘This cannot be happening.’ Fleetwood Mac had just three years under its belt and was gaining momentum as we prepared for our third album. It felt like a disaster waiting to happen,” she shared. She emphasized that it would have been detrimental to Fleetwood Mac’s future.
“It would have been a nightmare scenario for me,” she added.
Nicks also discussed her experience with abortion during an interview with Rolling Stone, published recently.
“I am not someone who could ever hand my child over to a nanny; that’s just not who I am. The idea of dragging a baby around while touring is something I couldn’t do,” she explained.
She noted that caring for a child wouldn’t take just nine months but several years—time which would ultimately disrupt the band’s dynamics and success.
Nicks has never regretted her choice regarding motherhood or its impact on her career aspirations as a rock musician. ”Not only did it enable me to pursue my dreams but it also allowed me the freedom to create music like this new song I’ve written,” she remarked proudly.
The Influence of Abortion Rights on Women’s Careers
A survey conducted by LeanIn.Org in July 2022 revealed that among 3,196 U.S workers aged 18 and older, approximately 76% of women expressed concerns regarding how the overturning of Roe v. Wade might hinder their professional growth opportunities.
Following this landmark decision, numerous women shared insights into how access to reproductive rights positively influenced their careers when speaking with Business Insider (BI).
An artist named Favianna Rodriguez reflected on having undergone abortions at ages 21 and 34: “I knew from deep within that motherhood wasn’t right for me at those times; financial constraints made my choice even clearer,” she recounted while discussing how these decisions allowed her artistic pursuits and financial stability without interruption.
Simiarly, Tracy Young—a CEO leading two startups—highlighted reproductive rights’ significance in shaping her professional journey: “Contraception enabled me to plan pregnancies according to when I felt ready,” said Young after welcoming her first child once she’d matured both personally and professionally as a leader.” She emphasized timing being crucial during pivotal moments such as launching startups where focus needed undivided attention.”
