October Box Office: Horror Films Reign Supreme
This October, the horror genre continues to lead the box office, with the latest release Smile 2 raking in an impressive $9.4 million on its opening day, including preview screenings on October 18. According to Variety, this figure surpasses that of its predecessor, Smile, which earned $8.2 million during its debut.
The sequel, which Mashable’s Monica Castillo describes as “even more entertaining and gruesome this time,” is not alone in making waves at the box office. The slasher film Terrifier 3, which previously topped charts last week, is expected to secure a third-place finish after generating $2.9 million this Friday.
In second place remains DreamWorks’ animated feature The Wild Robot, which is anticipated to surpass the $100 million mark domestically over the weekend despite also being available for digital purchase. Completing the top five are We Live in Time, featuring stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, alongside a revival of classic favorite Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, projected to become one of the highest-grossing films of 2024 in North America.
On a different note, expectations for Joker: Folie à Deux have not been met as it slips out of the top five with minimal impact.
Smile 2 widely available in theaters now.
