Mosquitoes rank among the most lethal creatures on the planet, primarily due to their remarkable capacity to transmit diseases by locating blood sources. Recent research suggests that mosquitoes are capable of detecting our heat emissions through infrared sensing. Infrared radiation from objects at temperatures similar to human skin can significantly enhance a mosquito’s ability to detect potential hosts, potentially doubling their target search. Experiments have shown that mosquitoes preferentially move towards heat sources over those only emitting odor and carbon dioxide (CO2). While it has been established that these insects can detect the CO2 we exhale, this newfound insight provides them with additional means of tracking humans. This groundbreaking discovery is outlined in a study published on August 21 in the journal Nature.
“The mosquito species we investigated, Aedes aegypti, exhibits exceptional proficiency in locating human hosts,” stated Nicolas DeBeaubien, one of the study’s co-authors and a molecular biologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). “This research unveils new dimensions regarding how these insects effectively pursue their targets.”

The mosquito variety known as Aedes aegypti, responsible for disseminating numerous viruses resulting in more than 100,000 annual cases of Zika virus, yellow fever, dengue fever, and others.
