Upon reaching retirement age, my husband and I crafted an adventurous plan. Our goal was to lease our California residence while immersing ourselves in the culturally rich city of Guanajuato, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What started as a six-month sojourn ultimately turned into 20 years of part-time expatriate life in Mexico.
Despite having settled here for two decades, I still find myself astonished by the cultural contrasts compared to American norms that shaped my earlier years.

The Indirection of Mexican Communication
In contrast to Americans, who typically communicate directly and without circumlocution, many Mexicans favor a subtler approach. When addressing issues honestly or straightforwardly can be construed as impolite or abrasive because it disrupts social harmony—an essential value across Latin cultures.
I’ve learned that when presented with yes-or-no questions, many Mexicans will tend toward hedging their responses instead of giving direct answers. For instance, rather than responding immediately about plans over breakfast during my yoga sessions, one classmate once took 160 words merely to suggest we finalize our meeting point—quite different from my straightforward communication style!
Cultural Views on Time: A Relaxed Approach
A noticeable cultural disparity I’ve encountered is around punctuality; some Mexicans exhibit a laid-back attitude towards timekeeping that can be disheartening at times. Just recently, while visiting the director of a local nonprofit organization about updating their newsletter publication schedule—a challenge compounded by unclear directions—I found myself growing frustrated waiting for her arrival after being informed she would return ahorita, which loosely translates to “soon.”
This vague timeline led me down an unnecessarily anxious path until she appeared thirty minutes late. Although I’m fluent in Spanish—my comfort level varies depending on situations—I left feeling somewhat diminished due to this experience where timing seemed subjective rather than absolute!
The Role of Humor: Playful Jibes are Commonplace
A huge aspect contributing to interpersonal dynamics among Mexicans appears fixed upon humor; playful teasing over nicknames or jokes about sensitive topics happens regularly without much reservation. At one concert I attended recently conducted by playful performers jokingly calling each other gordito, which means ‘little chubby,’ exemplifies this custom—and such comments might raise eyebrows if made stateside!
Cultural Preferences for Social Interaction Over Personal Space
Lively gatherings abound within Guanajuato’s festive culture—a reality where as an expat (gringa), I’ve struggled with close physical contact at times amidst crowds buzzing through events! A humorous anecdote arose during discussions between Barry (my British husband) and our young Spanish tutor; upon learning she’d finally gain her own bedroom after tying the knot with her sister’s upcoming marriage—the response surprised him entirely! While he envisioned blissful solitude per his narrative values around personal space—she expressed concern regarding biting loneliness instead!

Purchasing our home partially unveiled how significant considerate gestures are woven into daily interactions throughout Mexican society—a realization evolved gradually throughout these past two transformative decades!
