In a swift response to perceived risks associated with child exploitation, Turkey has recently enacted a ban on Roblox, just five days after implementing restrictions on Instagram. Reports indicate that the ban was triggered by allegations of inappropriate sexual content that potentially endangers children. According to Türkiye Today, governmental representatives cited issues such as the "promotion of homosexuality" and the facilitation of predatory behaviors through the game’s virtual currency, Robux.
Challenges in Content Monitoring
The Turkish authorities have emphasized that supervising content within Roblox poses considerable obstacles. The decision was made after an extensive investigation led by the chief public prosecutor’s office highlighted these challenges.
Recent Developments in Social Media Regulation
This latest action against Roblox follows a previous blockade of Instagram due to contention surrounding pro-Hamas content shared on the platform. On X (formerly Twitter), Turkeys’ communications head remarked that Instagram was “actively suppressing messages expressing condolences” for Ismail Haniyeh, a recently deceased Hamas leader.
